Not Boxing the Wave, Just Going with the Flow

August 27, 2009

I used to try to anticipate, plan for, and manage everything.  In business that’s a joke.  All things are negotiable and most things are unpredictable.  Trying to control everything is like trying to box a wave.  You can swing at the swell like Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield or the Great Muhammad Ali, but the result will be the same: pure exhaustion with few—or no—results.

Since I figured that out awhile back, I just go with the flow; and life’s been a bit easier and I’ve been a lot happier.  With this attitude, I am able to focus on the one thing I know with certainty: No matter what crops up in business, I’ll figure it out.

Everyone loves the All-American Success Story—that inspiring true tale of someone who makes it big against all odds.  But really, that’s just the end of the story.  The beginning and middle of the story are their days of trying to box waves and then realizing, like you and I, that going with the flow is easier, more productive and more profitable.

This revelation is the key to mental freedom when building a business.  So, if you haven’t already, free yourself—put down the gloves and ride the wave!
